Strategic Communications is delighted to be scheduling our 4th Asian Nuclear Power Briefing 2016 Tokyo from 30-31st March 2016. We are fortunate to once again be able to confirm Lady Barbara Judge, CBE, Chairman Emeritus, UK Atomic Energy Authority / Chairman, The Energy Institute of UCL, Deputy Chairman, TEPCO Nuclear Reform Monitoring Committee to chair the 2-day briefing.

We are very happy to be able to confirm that Mr Hirohide Hirai, Director General of the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry of Japan will be delivering the Opening Keynote Address and Mr Naomi Hirose, President of TEPCO will present a Keynote Address.

5 years on from Fukushima’s disaster that left countries reconsidering their nuclear power options, Japan has made considerable progress in rebuilding the Tohoku region over the last five years.  It has also crafted a new basic national energy plan for the period up to Y2030.

Japan has also now submitted its Intended Nationally Determined Contribution (“INDC”) as part of the United Nations COP 21 process committing to decarbonize its Y2030 economy by 25% compared with Y2013. As far as the Japanese Power Sector is concerned and as part of Prime Minister Abe’s Abenomics reform program Japan has also legislated to deregulate its Power Sector by Y2020 the year in which Japan will host the 2020 Olympics.

In summary Japan is back and to celebrate these remarkable achievements, the 4th Asian Nuclear Power Briefing 2016 is both timely and topical. Japan has also re-started two nuclear reactors in the southern island of Kyushu in Y2015 and is committed to make nuclear power 20-22% of its electricity mix by Y2030.

Asia is the main region in the world where electricity generating capacity and specifically nuclear power is growing significantly accounting for 75% of global nuclear power new build. There are currently 123 opearable nuclear power reactors, 41 under construction and firm plans to build a further 92.
